Download Garageband Lessons Directly

I tried to queue all the guitar lessons for download at once thinking I could set it and walk away while it worked. Silly me, that caused a weird problem where some of the files where basically corrupted and I was stuck in a “You Have Unfinished Downloads” loop that wouldn’t allow me to actually finish the job.

Fortunately I came across a blog post that provided real links to the download files. If you’re having the same problems I was this should do the trick.

Suffering and Life

In some respect, if I can even say this at all, I feel I have always been acutely aware and naturally sensitive to the existence of suffering in this world.

As I have grown older however, my understanding of that suffering seems to have become more of a hopeful grasp toward ideas rather than a by-product of clarity.

One thing is unquestionably certain: my life thus far been amazingly fortunate. I say those words with a full and constant awareness of the pain I’ve personally endured during my short time here on earth. Don’t misunderstand my intentions, such a personal evaluation is not delivered to trivialize any of the significant events that have nearly broken my heart to an unrepairable extent - but rather to honestly hold up those events against the light of reality.

Given the unjust misery endured by so many people in this world - I am deeply grateful at the fortunate hand that I have been ‘dealt’. But alone with that fortune what have I truly gained? What is a life that has simply avoided misery? Have I achieved the fleeting feelings of security? Of happiness?

Pain in life is unavoidable and a preoccupation to avoid pain is the path of fools. Happiness is much more than a feeling of the heart - it is a discipline of the mind.

Put your misfortunes in proper perspective and choose to be happy today. You owe it to those who share your life and to those whom you indirectly represent. Nothing makes spouses, religions, lifestyles, etc., looks more unappealing and less fulfilling than a unhappy representative.

Solving Japan’s Suicide Problem Might Create Worse Issues

Every day more than 90 people in Japan commit suicide. In Japanese culture suicide has long been viewed as “the honorable way out” but the government is trying to change that long held mindset.

A “counter-suicide White Paper” has just been published by the government which outlines strategies and steps to take transform the way suicide is regarded and treated. It calls for training more counselors and increasing the availability of suicide “hot-lines”.

The rest of this article is available here but the reason I even mention it is because of the following comment posted to the article:

How many people who take responsibility for themselves through suicide prevent ruining lives around them?
Suicide is a Sad statement but the sense of responsibility for ones own actions that prevails in Japan is Very Beautiful.
Others know they’re destructive beyond repair and do it. I see so many people who’ve done wrong turning themselves in. These are the only ones that deserve Mercy. I support, support for the stressed out and such but not at the cost of adopting Failed Western values where Rights and ‘I am worth it’ mentality prevails above Responsibilities and My neighbor is worth Respecting and not being trampled by me. This Country with such a low crime rate should hesitate long before feeding from the trough of western Psychobabble and Non science. Every where this social experimenting is adopted dysfunction, Crime and Violence Follow. New Zealand is a perfect example. Once with Very low crime like JP it’s become a sick land of dysfunction. DO SAVE LIVES but don’t trade them

I think James’ comments are very intriguing. What say you?

Timberlake To Host PGA Event in 2008

The PGA tour announced today that Justin Timberlake will serve as the host for the PGA Tour’s Las Vegas Event next year.

Apparently Timberlake takes his golf very seriously. He reportedly “practices every day, has a coach and takes his clubs whereever he goes”. A golf digest ranking released earlier this year says Timberlake carries a 6-handicap.

To put that into perspective, imagine that you were single, had all the time and money in the world and loved golf. How low would your handicap be? Yeah, me too… probably about a 6.

The press release also mentioned that George Lopez is hosting a PGA Tour event this year as well. I don’t know about you but I just can’t mentally add Justin Timberlake and George Lopez to the list of former celebrity event hosts that come to mind … Andy Williams, Danny Thomas, Dean Martin, Ed McMahon, Frank Sinatra, Glen Campbell, Jackie Gleason, Joe Garagiola. Nope, I can’t do it.

There must be an old adage written somewhere that correlates a society’s health to the character of the people whom it esteems. Who’s hosting next year? Paris Hilton? Brittney Spears? … rubbish.

Golf Addiction Taking Root

I was fortunate enough to get into golf when I was a teenager but once I got to college my regular play fell off the map completely.

I suppose my handicap never got better than a 15 or so for regulation courses but I played a local par 3 course (any fans of Sinaloa GC, Simi Valley, CA out there?) like crazy so my short game was always my forte.

Anyway, it was maybe a month and a half ago that my lovely bride of almost two years now said something about enjoying golf watching on TV. There happened to be a tournament on TV that weekend so we watched the final round one Sunday afternoon. I think she might have fallen asleep before it finished (not to say that she didn’t enjoy watching it) but I was really pulled into the match and now back into the game itself.

Since then:

  • I’ve made it a point to try to hit the driving range every other day
  • I’ve purchased new shoes and gloves
  • I signed up for lessons with a local pro (we’ve met twice thus far)
  • and I’ve developed tendinitis in my fingers/hands

That’s right… tendinitis. At first I though maybe my grips were too thin and hitting steel shafted irons off the driving mats were bruising the bones in my hands. Then I thought maybe just doing too much too soon (I try to hit ~85 balls each trip) might have torn the muscles in my hands like I’m prone to doing in my arms and chest when I ambitiously workout every 6 months. But as far as I know, there are no muscles in your fingers just ligaments and tendons that give you grip strength.

The more I read about tendinitis the more I’m convinced that is where my pain in coming from. My finger was even exhibiting behavior similar to mild trigger finger. The pain is especially bad for some reason in my left pinkie finger (yes, my instructor says my grip is in good form… well since he changed it anyway).

I’m going to give my hands a break for a week and then ease into the range again starting with closer to 30 balls the first time out. I can’t wait to feed the golf hunger but my body says otherwise.

They say you should do everything in moderation… but did they really mean golf as well?

BTW.. Bryan Coombes & Greg Witherall, if you ever read this send me a message. I think of you guys every time I get out on the course.
